Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wooden material must be subjected to a drying process to avoid dimensional changes and biological degradation. Moreover, during drying, the mechanical and technological properties of wood are increased. Therefore, the wood drying processes represent a mandatory technological step during the entire chain of wood processing.

Despite all the progress achieved in the field of wood drying, from technical and automatic control systems, companies are still faced with problems regarding drying times, quality of drying, energy consumption, and a lack of well-trained wood drying operators.

A lot of topics have been studied through experiments and modeling techniques to better understand and optimize the drying process. However, research studies are still needed to optimize the drying process of wood according to current requirements, namely, reducing the energy consumption and increasing the quality of products. Thus, we encourage all researchers dealing with wood drying to contribute to this Special Issue, which is focused on all topics related to drying like water migration in wood, heat and mass transfer, stress development, airflow in kilns, drying schedules, drying quality, controlling and monitoring the drying process, and so on.

The objective of this study was to determine the total color change and mass loss that heat treatment with six different combinations of temperature and time induces in ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), oak (Quercus robur L.) and walnut (Juglans regia L.) wood. As a result, a color palette was established for the three hardwood species, which are of interest for the furniture industry. Each color was associated with the obtained mass loss to present valuable information on how much the mechanical strength of the heat-treated material was affected. This study is of potential interest for furniture designers, as it promotes the color versatility of wood species without the addition of chemical substances. Full article
