Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Soil degradation continues to compromise soil processes, ecosystem services, biodiversity, productivity of agroforestry and climate resilience. In addition, the generation of waste is increasing significantly, with landfill and incineration being the primary disposal methods. However, the recovery of soils requires organic matter, nutrients and other essential inorganic components that are currently being discarded with these methods. These challenges require innovative and sustainable approaches to restore and maintain soil functions, support resource efficiency and facilitate the transition to a circular economy. Technosols and waste-derived amendments are attractive, sustainable, economical circular solutions that are attracting increasing attention due to their ability to enable the beneficial reuse of wastes from various socioeconomic sectors, improving degraded soils for different types of land use.
This Special Issue aims to present articles emphasising the development, characterisation, performance and medium- to long-term environmental effects of these Technosols and waste-derived amendments on degraded soils, vegetation and soil organisms, as well as the regulatory and policy frameworks supporting the safe and sustainable reuse of waste-derived materials, using laboratory, field and modelling approaches.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Environments is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
