Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water and wastewater treatment face growing challenges due to stricter environmental regulations, emerging contaminants, and the need for sustainable and energy-efficient technologies. Conventional treatment approaches often struggle with limited selectivity, high energy consumption, and insufficient adaptability to complex or variable water matrices. In recent years, advances in materials science and process engineering have created new opportunities to overcome these limitations.

This Special Issue, “Advances in Materials and Technologies for Water and Wastewater Treatment”, aims to highlight recent progress at the interface of materials innovation and environmental applications. Contributions are invited on the design, synthesis, and characterization of advanced materials—such as adsorbents, catalysts, membranes, and electrochemical systems—for pollutant removal, degradation, sensing, energy harvesting, and resource recovery. Studies addressing structure–property relationships, reaction mechanisms, interfacial processes, and performance under realistic water conditions are particularly encouraged.

By bringing together interdisciplinary research spanning materials science, chemistry, and environmental engineering, this collection seeks to advance next-generation technologies for efficient, resilient, and sustainable water and wastewater treatment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Environments is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
