Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Following the tremendous global trends in cyclic economies, a new and interesting class of energy sources has been established in recent years as a result of the combination of two main targets, i.e., the reduction of the worldwide reliance on coal and fossil fuels and the beneficial handling of wastes and byproducts. Gasification processes are nowadays being studied extensively in order to enable energy production accompanied by a greener fingerprint and zero greenhouse gas emissions. The merging of different solid and/or liquid feedings—such as biomass, byproducts, and wastes—as inputs to gasification processes is of major interest, and much research effort has been devoted to this scientific field. The environmental impact and social benefits of such projects make these developmental challenges strongly attractive, and numerous distinct researchers and research teams are intensively working on this subject. Moreover, novel reactor architectures with the aim of increasing the conversion capacity of the gasification process are also of high interest. The process of energy production is electric and/or thermal, and occurs not only via synthesis gas combustion but also through hydrogen conversion using fuel cell devices.

The gasification process has been extensively studied both upon theoretical and experimental bases due to its interesting mechanical and chemical challenges.

To further spread the knowledge regarding technologies and methods related to biomass gasification as an alternative energy source within this research topic, this Special Issue, entitled “Alternative Energy Sources: Biomass Gasification”, was proposed for the international journal Energies, which is an SSCI- and SCIE-indexed journal (2018 IF = 2.707). This Special Issue will present original research and studies related to the abovementioned topics including, but not limited to, the gasification process of different kind of biomass or wastes or liquids, combined feedings for gasification, and the development of novel reactor and mechanical systems for gasification process (e.g., plasma, fluidized bed, rotary kiln, updraft, downdraft, and other gasifiers). The submission of experimental and theoretical original research articles as well as review papers are encouraged. Papers selected for this Special Issue will be subject to a rigorous peer-review procedure with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications.

I am writing to invite you to submit your original work to this Special Issue. I am looking forward to reading about your outstanding research.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
