Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The accelerating integration of distributed renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, flexible loads, and energy storage systems has introduced new challenges in the operation, control, and optimization of modern energy systems. To ensure stability, efficiency, and sustainability in this increasingly complex environment, advanced smart energy management systems (SEMSs) have become indispensable. These systems serve as the digital intelligence layer of future energy networks, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive control, coordinated optimization, and multi-vector energy interactions across electricity, heat, gas, and mobility domains.

This Special Issue, titled “Advanced Smart Energy Management Systems”, aims to gather high-quality research that advances both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of smart energy management. It will focus on innovative models, algorithms, control architectures, and digital technologies that support intelligent decision-making and enhance energy flexibility, resilience, and efficiency at various system levels—from households and microgrids to industrial clusters and smart cities.

We welcome original research articles, case studies, and review papers addressing topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • AI-driven, data-driven, and model-predictive control for energy management and optimization;
  • Multi-agent systems and distributed intelligence for smart grids and energy communities;
  • Integration of renewable energy sources, storage, and electric mobility in SEMSs;
  • Digital twins and cyber–physical platforms for energy system monitoring and coordination;
  • Demand response and flexibility management across multiple energy vectors;
  • Blockchain, IoT, and edge computing applications for secure and decentralized SEMSs;
  • Smart building and industrial energy management strategies;
  • Resilience, cybersecurity, and reliability of digitalized energy infrastructures;
  • Energy management for carbon-neutral and net-zero transition pathways.

By combining interdisciplinary perspectives from control engineering, energy informatics, and artificial intelligence, this Special Issue seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the emerging paradigms defining the future of intelligent, adaptive, and sustainable energy systems. We invite researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and public sectors to contribute their latest findings and insights to shape the next generation of advanced smart energy management solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
