Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition toward low carbon energy systems and sustainable natural systems requires innovative solutions that integrate energy production, carbon management, and environmental functions. Biochar and solid biofuels are no longer only energy sources; they have become multifunctional materials linking renewable energy, carbon resource management, and innovative applications across multiple industrial and agricultural sectors.

Modern biomass conversion technologies allow the design of unconventional biofuels used as energy and carbon storage, soil modifiers, nutrient carriers, and components of innovative systems for pollution remediation, health protection, and enhanced agricultural productivity. This approach enables the creation of closed loop systems that combine efficient energy production with improvements in environmental quality and agricultural products.

In this Special Issue, authors are invited to submit original research articles and review papers addressing advanced technologies, integration of energy and agricultural systems, life cycle assessment (LCA), emission reduction strategies, and applications of biochar and solid biofuels in energy systems, agro-environmental management, and innovative biomass production methods.

Particular attention will also be given to emerging thermochemical biomass conversion pathways, including hydrothermal carbonization and torrefaction, as well as the integration of biochar production with anaerobic digestion and waste management systems in order to enhance resource efficiency and support circular bioeconomy strategies.

This Special Issue aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for knowledge exchange, promoting innovative bioenergy and agro-environmental solutions that support the global transition toward low-carbon and climate-resilient systems.

Contributions addressing techno-economic analysis, system integration approaches, and the role of biochar in carbon sequestration strategies, including emerging carbon markets as well as biochar standards and certification frameworks, are also highly encouraged.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
