Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Internal combustion engines (ICEs) remain a cornerstone of global mobility and power generation, even as the transportation and energy sectors move toward decarbonization. ICE technology is undergoing rapid transformation, with research increasingly focused on improving combustion efficiency, reducing harmful emissions, and expanding compatibility with alternative and renewable fuels. Hydrogen, biofuels, synthetic fuels, and other low-carbon energy carriers are being actively investigated as pathways to extend the relevance of ICEs within a cleaner energy landscape, particularly in applications where full electrification remains impractical, such as heavy-duty transport, marine propulsion, and regions with limited charging infrastructure.
This Special Issue aims to bring together the latest research on internal combustion engine technologies, emission control strategies, and engine fuels. We welcome original research articles and reviews covering, but not limited to, the following areas:
- Hydrogen and alternative fuel combustion in ICEs;
- Advanced combustion strategies (HCCI, PCCI, dual-fuel systems);
- Emission control technologies and aftertreatment systems;
- Fuel efficiency optimisation and engine calibration;
- Biofuels, synthetic fuels, and fuel blending effects;
- Engine performance under alternative fuel operation;
- Computational and experimental methods in engine research;
- End-of-life considerations and sustainability in engine design.
We encourage contributions that combine experimental, numerical, and policy-oriented perspectives, as the future of ICE technology depends on integrated approaches spanning combustion science, materials engineering, and regulatory frameworks. Submissions addressing the ASEAN and broader developing-region context, where ICE vehicles will remain dominant for the foreseeable future, are particularly welcome.
We look forward to your contributions to this Special Issue and to advancing the collective understanding of how internal combustion engines can evolve to meet tomorrow's efficiency and emission challenges.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
