Dear Colleagues,
Around 40 years ago, the seminal works of Schweppe et al (1988), Joskow & Schmalensee (1988), and Hogan (1992) provided the academic foundations for the restructuring of the power sector and the incentive-compatible development of wholesale spot markets for electricity. Today, we find ourselves with a multitude of systemic developments—the onset of new generation and storage technologies, the need to decarbonize (and strategically electrify) economies, the impetus for large-scale electronic load growth and distributed energy resources—all set against a tense political economy of energy.
Faced with such factors, an important question arises for electricity market design in this next phase: evolution or revolution? There is a need for careful assessment of the rationale for change, the approach/method, and the solutions that new technology enables. What aspects of canonical market designs are foundational, and which require change? In this Special Issue, we seek innovative research perspectives on all of these topics that will promulgate new ideas, encourage robust discourse, and assist in enabling a smooth and durable transition to the electricity systems of the future.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
