Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, several advancements in endoscopic imaging modalities have been made, revolutionizing the diagnosis of digestive diseases and improving the quality of human life. Nowadays, sophisticated imaging technologies offer gastroenterologists an unprecedented opportunity to inspect the entire gastrointestinal tract, which results in accurate diagnoses and treatments. White light endoscopy (WLE) was the first method used for endoscopic examination and remains the mainstay of routine clinical examination. Aiming to improve accuracy, chromoendoscopy using biocompatible dye agents or optical image enhancement technologies, i.e., narrow-band imaging (NBI), have been proven efficacious in improving the detection of a plethora of digestive diseases, mainly precancerous lesions. Capsule endoscopy shed light for the very first time into the darkness of the small bowel, while its evolution (i.e., enteroscopy) has allowed the entire digestive tract to be visualized in real time, along with the simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of the pathological findings encountered. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) not only has established itself as the optimal examination technique for the diagnosis of pancreatobiliary disease but also is a helpful tool for the diagnosis and staging of various gastrointestinal tract lesions as well as mediastinal lesions. Novel technological improvements of EUS (elastography, contrast enhancement, EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy, etc.) have further extended its limits regarding digestive diseases diagnosis. The traditional endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure has been reshaped with the advent of new modern tools (i.e., Spyglass™) that not only provide exceptional direct visualization of the bile ducts but also enable therapeutic interventions to be performed in one session and by a single endoscopist. Implementing these enhanced technologies allows endoscopists to access the most appropriate diagnostic options and ultimately perform optimal therapeutic decisions, using minimally invasive procedures with shorter recovery times and lower complications rates compared to traditional diagnostic techniques. This Special Issue features the progress of digestive diseases diagnosis. We believe that readers will enjoy this Special Issue that aims to provide further insights into new diagnostic technologies and their clinical applicability, so that patients can benefit from the best possible care.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Diagnostics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
