Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Various surface properties, including roughness, hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and wettability, play a crucial role in the mechanical performance and service life of components across various industries. However, traditional surface polishing and finishing techniques often have limited precision, efficiency, and ability to adapt to complex geometries and advanced material systems. As a result, innovative surface modification technologies, particularly laser-assisted and multi-energy field composite processing techniques, have emerged as effective strategies for enhancing mechanical performance.
Laser surface modification attracts a great deal of attention due to its precise energy control, localized treatment, and adaptability. Techniques such as laser polishing, laser texturing, laser hardening, and laser-assisted coating deposition offer a versatile approach to optimizing surface properties. In parallel, multi-energy field composite processing—combining laser energy with electric fields, magnetic fields, ultrasonic vibration, or plasma—further enhances material interactions at the micro/nanoscale, improving surface characteristics and functional properties.
This Special Issue aims to explore the latest advances in laser surface modification and multi-energy field processing techniques, focusing on their mechanisms, processing strategies, material interactions, and industrial applications. We welcome contributions that address theoretical modelling, experimental research, and practical implementations in fields such as aerospace, biomedical engineering, electronics, and high-precision manufacturing.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- The fundamentals and mechanisms of laser surface modification.
- Laser polishing and its effects on surface morphology and mechanical properties.
- Laser-assisted texturing for friction and wear control.
- Multi-energy field composite processing for surface finishing and functionalization.
- Hybrid processing combining laser technology with electric, magnetic, and ultrasonic fields.
- In situ monitoring and control of laser surface treatment processes.
- Applications of advanced surface finishing in aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and electronic industries.
This Special Issue will provide a platform for researchers to share their insights into the latest developments in surface polishing and finishing strategies, fostering innovation in advanced manufacturing and engineering applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
