Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
A metal oxide layer is a thin layer or coating of an oxide onto a specific surface. Such a coating may be protective, decorative or functional. Most metals form oxide layers when they are exposed to the atmosphere, and the nature of this oxide depends on the metal and the conditions under which it is oxidized. On the other hand, the growth of metal oxides onto any kind of surface is very common, and a huge amount of scientific research has been dedicated to this subject. There are a many deposition techniques dedicated to the realization of metal oxide thin films, from brush or spray deposition to ultra-high-vacuum techniques such as MOCVD, LASER deposition techniques etc.
This Special Issue is dedicated to the most recent advancements regarding metal oxide layer deposition, characterization and application as protective, decorative or functional coatings onto any kind of substrate. The Issue covers all types of metal oxides with electrical, optical, mechanical, sensing, piezoelectric, superconducting, catalytic, photocatalytic, thermoelectric, phase-transforming, magnetic, ferroic, and multiferroic properties, and includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
- Thin and thick films;
- Nanostructured coatings;
- Nanostructured coating systems;
- High surface area systems;
- Fabrication technologies and characterization techniques;
- Surface and interfaces processes;
- Transport phenomena;
- Design and simulation models;
- Functional devices of any kind.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
