Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Corrosion protection coatings play a crucial role in extending the service life of materials and structures across various industries, including aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, and infrastructure. The performance of these coatings depends on their physicochemical and mechanical properties, which are influenced by composition, microstructure, and preparation techniques. Recent advances in coating design, characterization methods, and computational modelling have enabled the development of high-performance coatings with enhanced durability and functionality. This Special Issue aims to report research on the synthesis, characterization, and application of corrosion-protective coatings, emphasizing their physicochemical and mechanical behavior under various environmental conditions. It seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-property relationships in protective coatings and their practical implications for industrial applications.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

(1) Advanced coating materials: Polymers, nanocomposites, metallic alloys, ceramics, and hybrid coatings.

(2) Surface engineering: Pretreatment, surface strengthening, functionalization, and adhesion enhancement.

(3) Characterization techniques: Electrochemical methods, nanoindentation, spectroscopy, and microscopy.

(4) Mechanical properties: Hardness, wear resistance, scratch resistance, and fatigue behaviour.

(5) Degradation mechanisms: Corrosion kinetics, environmental aging, and failure analysis.

(6) Innovative deposition techniques: PVD, CVD, sol–gel, electrodeposition, and thermal spray.

(7) Smart and self-healing coatings: Stimuli-responsive materials for autonomous corrosion inhibition.

(8) Modelling and simulation: Predictive tools for coating performance and lifetime estimation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
