Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Resin-based coatings and thin films play a critical role in a wide range of industrial and technological applications, from protective layers and functional surfaces to advanced electronic and biomedical devices. Advances in resin chemistry, curing technologies, and formulation strategies have enabled the development of high-performance coatings and films with tailored physicochemical properties, improved durability, and multifunctional capabilities. Furthermore, the growing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly, and resource-efficient materials has further spurred research into renewable raw materials, green synthesis routes, and low-VOC systems, as well as novel resin modifications to meet emerging environmental and performance standards.

This Special Issue aims to bring together original research articles and reviews focusing on recent developments in the synthesis, processing, characterization, and application of resin-based coatings and thin films. Contributions addressing structure–property relationships, innovative resin formulations, hybrid and nanocomposite systems, and advanced deposition or curing techniques are particularly encouraged. Studies exploring the integration of resins with functional fillers, responsive polymers, or bio-based components to enhance optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, or barrier properties are also welcome.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Synthesis and chemical modification of resins for coatings and thin films.
  • Bio-based and sustainable resin systems.
  • UV-, EB-, and thermal-curable resin technologies.
  • Structure–property relationships in resin-based films.
  • Hybrid, nanostructured, and composite resin coatings.
  • Functional coatings with optical, electronic, or antimicrobial properties.
  • Corrosion-, wear-, and weather-resistant resin coatings.
  • Advanced deposition methods (spray, dip, spin, 3D printing, etc.).
  • Characterization techniques for resin films (spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, etc.).
  • Industrial applications in electronics, automotive, aerospace, packaging, and biomedicine.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
