Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue “Advanced Studies in Building Information Modelling for Human‑Centric Construction” focuses on how Building Information Modelling supports safer, healthier and more inclusive construction processes throughout the project lifecycle. Contributions are expected to demonstrate how digital building models can embed and operationalise human needs, from early design decisions through construction planning to long‑term operation. Emphasis is placed on methods and applications that translate BIM data into actionable insights for workers, occupants and decision‑makers in real projects.

Relevant topics include human-centred BIM applications on construction sites, integration of BIM with sensing technologies and wearables for monitoring production, safety, and ergonomics, and BIM-enabled digital twins (DTw). Further themes cover accessibility and inclusive design through BIM‑based workflows, information requirements and data structures that prioritise human factors, and AI‑supported approaches that make complex BIM information more understandable for diverse stakeholders. Submissions may adopt quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, including case studies, systematic reviews, field experiments, simulations, and collaborative industry–academia initiatives that demonstrate measurable human-centric benefits.

The Special Issue aims to contribute to the evolving knowledge on Construction 4.0 and 5.0 by positioning human‑centric BIM as a key enabler of digital transition in the built environment. Manuscripts that connect technical innovation with organisational, educational or policy dimensions of BIM (and openBIM) adoption are especially encouraged. Contributions are encouraged to provide a clear focus on human value creation. Interdisciplinary work linking construction management, openBIM, design, computer science, industrialised construction, digital product passports (DPP), human-data interaction (HDI), lean construction, occupational health, electronic performance monitoring (EPM), ergonomics and social sciences is highly welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
