Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The building sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by decarbonization goals, increasing electrification, renewable energy integration and the growing need for grid flexibility and resilience. Buildings are evolving from passive energy consumers into active participants in future energy systems through demand response, distributed energy resources, thermal and electrical energy storage and intelligent energy management. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced control strategies are emerging as key enablers for optimizing building performance while supporting grid stability, occupant comfort and operational resilience.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue on “Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Control for Grid-Integrated, Energy-Flexible and Resilient Buildings”.

This Special Issue aims to advance the state of the art in intelligent building energy management by bringing together researchers and practitioners working on AI-driven methodologies, advanced control techniques and digital solutions for next-generation buildings.  In this Special Issue, original research articles and review papers are welcome. Research topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Model predictive control (MPC) for buildings and communities
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for building energy management
  • Reinforcement learning and adaptive control strategies
  • Grid-interactive efficient buildings (GEBs)
  • Demand response and load flexibility
  • Building-to-grid integration and transactive energy systems
  • Digital twins for intelligent building operation
  • Fault detection, diagnostics and predictive maintenance
  • Energy flexibility assessment and performance metrics
  • Occupant-centric control and human-in-the-loop optimization
  • Renewable energy integration and energy storage systems
  • Resilience assessment and control during extreme events
  • Smart sensors, IoT and edge intelligence in buildings
  • Multi-building and district-scale energy optimization
  • Field demonstrations and real-world implementations of advanced control systems

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
