Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past decade, we have witnessed constant progress in the development of digital tools that have greatly facilitated the analysis and evaluation of the environmental performance of buildings and cities. Among these tools, Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms have emerged as significant contributors to our understanding of the interaction mechanisms between buildings and their surrounding environment. In recent years, BIM has been seamlessly integrated into the methodological framework of significant scientific research in the field of building sustainability.

The primary objective of this Special Issue is to showcase the potential of utilizing BIM platforms in scientific research related to building sustainability. We aim to curate a collection of the most relevant and recent investigations that employ BIM as a fundamental element in the research process.

For this Special Issue, we welcome original research articles and reviews. Research areas may encompass, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • BIM applications for environmental assessment;
  • Integration of BIM and construction project management;
  • Utilization of BIM-based models for evaluating building performance during the operational stage (comfort, energy, water, etc.);
  • Leveraging 3D BIM for the analysis of sustainability in urban systems;
  • Building information modeling applications in heritage conservation (HBIM);
  • The incorporation of artificial intelligence algorithms into BIM for the comprehensive analysis of buildings' environmental, social, and economic aspects (AI-BIM);
  • Applications of BIM–blockchain integration in the realm of buildings.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
