Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rapid urbanization, growing energy demand and the escalating impacts of climate change are placing unprecedented pressure on cities to pursue more sustainable and low-carbon development pathways. Buildings are central to this transition, as they represent a major share of urban energy consumption and carbon emissions and are closely interconnected with land use, urban form, infrastructure and human activities. Despite advances in energy efficiency, renewable energy and low-carbon technologies, achieving meaningful urban decarbonization requires more than isolated technological solutions. Integrated approaches that combine technological innovation with effective policies, spatial planning, land-use strategies and evidence-based decision-making are increasingly essential.

This Special Issue aims to advance interdisciplinary research on pathways toward energy-efficient, low-carbon and sustainable cities. It welcomes theoretical, empirical and methodological studies addressing building energy performance, urban energy consumption, carbon emissions and mitigation, low-carbon technologies, land-use and spatial planning, policy instruments and other emerging approaches that contribute to sustainable transformation of the built environment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
