Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid advancement of digital technologies is transforming the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings. Smart buildings, enabled by the integration of sensors, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), building information modeling (BIM), and advanced analytics, are becoming increasingly capable of monitoring, learning, and adapting to occupant needs and environmental conditions. At the same time, digital twin technology has emerged as a powerful tool for creating dynamic virtual representations of physical assets, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analysis, and data-driven decision-making throughout the building lifecycle. Furthermore, advancements in immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) are enhancing human interaction with digital twins, creating new possibilities for building design, operation, and occupant engagement.

This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and industry professionals to explore emerging developments, innovative applications, challenges, and future directions in smart buildings and digital twin technologies. Contributions addressing theoretical, methodological, technological, and practical aspects are particularly welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Building digital twins and cyber–physical systems
  • Smart buildings and intelligent infrastructure
  • BIM-enabled digital twin development and applications
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and sensor integration in buildings
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for building management
  • Energy-efficient and net-zero smart buildings
  • Occupant-centric building design and operation
  • Human–building interaction and user experience
  • Indoor environmental quality, thermal comfort, and well-being
  • Real-time monitoring, visualization, and control systems
  • Virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality for digital twins
  • Smart facility management and asset lifecycle management
  • Sustainable building performance assessment and optimization
  • Digital twins for retrofitting and renovation projects
  • Smart wearables for construction health and safety
  • Promoting net-zero carbon in buildings through digital tools
  • Advances in construction 5.0

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
