Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have emerged as a transformative platform, uniquely combining the label-free, real-time analysis capability of traditional SPR with the inherent advantages of fiber optics: miniaturization, remote sensing, low cost and electromagnetic immunity. This Special Issue focuses on the latest breakthroughs in fiber-optic SPR (Fiber-SPR) technology and their expanding role in biomedical applications, where in vivo or point-of-care detection remains challenging.

The scope covers innovative Fiber-SPR configurations, including, but not limited to, localized SPR (LSPR) on optical fibers, tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensors, hetero-core structures and side-polished or D-shaped fibers. Emphasis is placed on novel nanomaterial coatings (e.g., 2D materials like graphene, MXenes, gold nanoparticles or hybrid nanostructures) to enhance sensitivity, stability and functionalization capacity. Key biomedical applications include real-time monitoring of biomarkers for cancer, cardiac diseases and neurological disorders; the detection of pathogens and exosomes; therapeutic drug monitoring and implantable or wearable biosensing. We invite original research articles, comprehensive reviews and short communications that advance the design, fabrication and clinical translation of Fiber-SPR platforms for improved diagnostics, prognoses and personalized medicine.
