Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Gas biosensors represent a major breakthrough in detection technologies, integrating biological systems (e.g., biomolecules, biorecognition mechanisms, and bioinspired structural principles) with advanced transduction platforms. These devices provide transformative capabilities for disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and industrial safety. Their applications span multiple critical domains, including: healthcare and breath-based diagnostics (e.g., noninvasive disease screening, wearable monitoring); environmental and air quality monitoring (e.g., greenhouse gas detection, pollution source tracing); food safety and agriculture (e.g., freshness assessment of meat and produce, livestock environment monitoring, composting and waste treatment); public safety (e.g., detection of illicit drugs, precursor chemicals, and explosives); and smart homes and residential security (e.g., indoor air quality management, proactive gas leak detection).

Despite substantial progress, significant challenges remain in achieving reliable deployment of portable and clinically viable devices. These include the following:

  • Designing sensors capable of stable, highly selective, and trace-level detection of target gases;
  • Enabling low-cost, large-scale manufacturing of disposable sensing modules;
  • Supporting operation in complex real-world scenarios and facilitating commercial scalability.

This Special Issue, “Gas Biosensors and Their Applications,” aims to solicit original research that advances the following areas:

  1. Novel biosensing architectures (e.g., bioinspired structural designs, integration with advanced nanomaterials, microfluidic systems, and sensing–memory–computing integration)
  2. Emerging sensing mechanisms and principles (e.g., development of sensors based on new phenomena, techniques, and strategies; elucidation of biochemical interactions between gases and sensing interfaces; fundamental analysis of gas-induced optical, electrical, magnetic, and mechanical signal transduction; and incorporation of artificial intelligence)
  3. Performance breakthroughs (e.g., improvements in sensitivity, stability, selectivity, limit of detection, and reduction of cross-sensitivity)
  4. Applications and translation (e.g., validation in complex clinical, environmental, and industrial settings, as well as scalable manufacturing strategies toward commercialization)

We invite submissions that contribute to advancing gas biosensing technologies, expanding their real-world deployment and commercial translation, and addressing the growing demand for olfactory data in intelligent systems in the information age.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Biosensors is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
