Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Non-fasting triglycerides are recognized as a strong and independent predictor of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The postprandial accumulation of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and their remnants contributes to cholesterol deposits within the arterial wall, and induces a low-grade inflammation marked by endothelial dysfunction and leukocyte activation. Equally, the intravascular metabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles is intimately linked to those of other circulating lipoprotein particles, specifically HDL, thus modulating their biological functions. The interindividual variability of postprandial triglyceride response results from a combination of various non-modifiable factors (primarily genetic background, age, and gender) and modifiable factors (e.g., diet, medication, exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption). A defective ability of the organism to manage a repeated hypercaloric lipid-rich diet elicits abnormal responses that contribute to the onset of exaggerated postprandial triglyceridemia and the development of chronic cardiometabolic diseases.

This ”Biomolecules” Special Issue titled “Postprandial Metabolism and Cardiovascular Risk” seeks to provide contemporary consideration of how the magnitude of postprandial elevation in triglycerides or triglyceride-rich lipoproteins rather than circulating levels of triglycerides or those particles themselves primarily contribute to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, especially the etiology of cardiometabolic disorders. Original manuscripts and reviews dealing with any aspect of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein metabolism and related pathophysiology are very welcome.
