Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the Special Issue titled “Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and Antimicrobials”, we aim to present a comprehensive, multidisciplinary overview of this increasingly recognized and clinically relevant condition. This Special Issue, edited by Prof. Mislav Radić and Dr. Andrej Belančić, will focus on both clinical and preclinical insights into the management of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), with a special emphasis on the role of antimicrobials.
Given the complex and multifactorial nature of SIBO, we welcome contributions from a wide array of fields, including gastroenterology, clinical pharmacology, infectology, immunology/rheumatology, and related disciplines. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the impact of altered gut microbiota on host health, innovative approaches, antimicrobial resistance in SIBO treatment, the role of immunological dysregulation, gut–liver axis implications, microbiome–host interaction in autoimmune diseases, and new antimicrobial or probiotic/prebiotic strategies. Contributions exploring preclinical models and translational research are also highly encouraged.
As SIBO continues to be linked to a growing number of chronic and systemic conditions, its relevance in both everyday clinical practice and biomedical research is rising. However, the field still faces many challenges, including gaps in standardized diagnostic criteria, optimal treatment strategies, and long-term patient management. Thus, this Special Issue seeks to gather novel findings and expert perspectives that will help advance our understanding and improve clinical outcomes.
We believe that Antibiotics and Biomedicines are the excellent platform to support this type of multidisciplinary discussion, facilitating the integration of clinical practice with emerging scientific evidence.
We hope our Special Issue will spark interest among researchers, clinicians, and healthcare professionals and provide a valuable resource for those involved in the diagnosis and treatment of SIBO.
If you are interested in contributing an article that fits the scope of this Special Issue, please feel free to contact the editors or reach out to the Editorial Board of the journal. We look forward to your submissions and a fruitful collaboration.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
