The Structure-Related Function of Alpha-Synuclein Protein in Diseases
This special issue belongs to the section “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Synucleinopathies are a group of neurological disorders characterized by the abnormal aggregation of the alpha-synuclein protein in neurons or glial cells. Diseases include Parkinson’s disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA). PD is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Progressive accumulation of protein alpha-synuclein occurs within inclusions/structures known as Lewy bodies, which are the pathologic hallmarks of PD. Similarly, DLB results in neuronal loss, which leads to profound dopamine dysfunction and marked cholinergic pathology. MSA can exhibit glial as well as some neuronal protein aggregation, which ultimately leads to neurodegeneration and disease progression. We are very excited to be involved in this alpha-synuclein Issue of Biology. This volume focuses on the molecular mechanisms of protein misfolding related to synucleinopathies, functional domains of alpha-synuclein, cellular and animal models of disease progression, and therapeutic approaches targeting alpha-synuclein aggregation and other pathways. This Special Issue invites original research papers and reviews that cover the topics regarding alpha-synuclein and synucleinopathies.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
