Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on "Animal Models of Retinal Degenerative Diseases," providing a comprehensive exploration of the indispensable role of vision. Vision not only enriches the human experience by facilitating social interactions, literacy, and cognitive development but also remains critically vulnerable to various degenerative conditions. Retinal degenerative diseases significantly impair this crucial sense, leading to considerable challenges in daily life. To advance our understanding of these diseases, animal models, particularly those that incorporate human mutations or are humanized at the genetic level, are invaluable. These models offer insights into the disease mechanisms at play and are fundamental in the progression from pathological understanding to therapeutic innovation. Through detailed characterizations of genotype–phenotype correlations, these models illuminate the intricate biology of retinal diseases. This Special Issue aims to introduce the latest research on animal models of retinal degenerative diseases. It will cover a range of topics, including the detailed characterization of these models, the relationship between genetic mutation and disease manifestation, and the development and assessment of novel treatments.
