Dear Colleagues,
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver disease is defined as a liver injury caused by hepatic ER stress and the hepatic accumulation of misfolded alpha-1 antitrypsin and lipid droplets. The main histological features are PAS+D-positive globules and fat accumulation, progression to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and HCC. These changes may be triggered and exacerbated by extrinsic factors, including chronic infections or systemic inflammation. In addition to adults, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver injury also occurs in about 10% of infants born with the severe form of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
For this Special Issue, we encourage the submission of manuscripts on any aspects of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency-associated liver disease, including epidemiology, pathogenesis, organ–organ interactions, progression to cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease, and/or treatment approaches. We welcome the submission of review articles and short- and full-size original research articles to this topical Special Issue.
