Dear Colleagues,
For decades, the field of visual perception has been significantly advanced by highly controlled laboratory paradigms. While these studies have revealed fundamental mechanisms of the visual system, they often used artificial tasks and simplified stimuli such as Gabor patches, moving dots, and geometric shapes, which cannot fully capture the complexity and variability that define human perceptual experience in daily contexts. This Special Issue, “Visual Perception in Daily Tasks”, seeks to bridge the gap between lab-based vision research and ecological reality.
We invite submissions that investigate how the human visual system navigates the challenges of everyday life and specialized professional settings. From high-stakes visual search in medical imaging to the multisensory integration necessary for safe driving, our goal is to highlight research that combines scientific rigor with high ecological validity. We are particularly interested in work involving visual tasks in naturalistic or simulated environments. By focusing on the applied aspects of visual perception, this Special Issue aims to generalize our understanding of the visual system from the lab to the diverse contexts of the modern world.
The following list highlights topics of particular interest, but we welcome any study that bridges the gap between lab studies and the real world. Submission types include empirical studies, reviews, meta-analyses, and methodology papers.
- Daily visual tasks and methodologies:
- Studies in realistic environments (e.g., driving, navigation, reading).
- Insights from big data and crowdsourced studies.
- Perceptual optimization in modern technology:
- Perceptual challenges in AR/VR/MR environments.
- Perceptual considerations for modern displays.
- Perceptual aspects of data visualization.
- Visual accessibility in digital design.
- Visual factors in specialized professions:
- Visual search in radiology, video surveillance, security screening, etc.
- Visual performance in high-complexity and high-pressure tasks such as gaming and sports.
- Visual challenges and solutions in extreme environments (e.g., underwater or aerospace).
- Clinical populations and aging:
- Impacts of vision decline/loss on daily visual tasks.
- The development and application of assistive technology and rehabilitation.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Behavioral Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
