Dear Colleagues,
Cochlear implantation represents one of the most important advances in auditory rehabilitation and continues to evolve rapidly through innovations in technology, surgical techniques, audiological management, and neuroscientific research. In recent decades, the indications for cochlear implantation have progressively expanded, involving increasingly complex clinical scenarios and contributing significantly to the improvement of hearing, communication, and quality of life in both pediatric and adult patients.
This Special Issue of Audiology Research will include the Official Report of the 2027 Congress of the Italian Society of Audiology and Phoniatrics (SIAF), entitled “New Perspectives in Cochlear Implantation”, edited by Stefano Berrettini and Francesca Forli. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a comprehensive and updated overview of the current state of the art, innovative approaches, and future perspectives in cochlear implantology, encompassing clinical, surgical, audiological, rehabilitative, technological, and neuroscientific aspects.
The Special Issue will include twelve chapters addressing the most relevant and emerging topics in the field, including: current cochlear implant systems and future perspectives; guidelines and indications for cochlear implantation in adults and children; innovative surgical techniques; complications and management of device failures; cochlear implantation in cochleo-vestibular hydropic disease, auditory neuropathy, and cochlear nerve deficiency; cochlear implantation in the elderly and its relationship with cognitive decline; cochlear implantation in single-sided deafness; cortical processing and neural tracking of speech after implantation; voice outcomes in cochlear implant users; telemedicine in cochlear implant care; and future developments such as optical stimulation, intraneural electrodes, and piezoelectric implants.
The Special Issue is therefore intended to provide an authoritative and multidisciplinary contribution from leading experts involved in contemporary cochlear implant research and clinical practice. Further, it aims to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and scientific discussion among otologists, audiologists, phoniatricians, speech therapists, engineers, neuroscientists, and researchers involved in hearing restoration and cochlear implant care.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Audiology Research is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
