Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The interaction between the lower atmosphere and the ocean surface is a fundamental component of the Earth's climate system. Global climate change is fundamentally altering the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere, leading to rising sea levels and an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events. Changes in atmospheric circulation patterns, driven by global warming, are directly altering wind regimes and, consequently, the wave climate across the world's oceans. Changes in wind and wave patterns (variability) not only increase the risks of coastal erosion and flooding but also threaten offshore structures, port operations, and marine ecosystems.
This Special Issue aims to bridge the gap between atmospheric sciences and marine dynamics. Thus, this Special Issue is fully aligned with the journal’s “Climatology” and “Air–Sea Interaction” sections. We invite contributions that explore the variability of wind and wave climates from a meteorological perspective, focusing on how shifting atmospheric pressures, storm tracks, and teleconnection patterns (such as NAO, ENSO, etc.) influence the marine environment, especially under the conditions of extreme weather events and rising sea levels.

- Statistical analysis and trend identification of long-term wind and wave data.
- Wind and wave climate projections using CMIP6 and similar global/regional climate models.
- Historical and projected changes over wind and wave climates.
- Uncertainties in climate models on wind and wave climates.
- Wind and wave climate variability and drivers of variability (e.g., climate modes).
- Influence of climate variability modes over winds and waves.
- The impact of changing wind patterns on coastal erosion and sea level changes.
- Changes in storm surges, tropical cyclones, and “rogue wave” (giant wave) formations.
- The effects of changes in wind and wave climate on coastal erosion, sediment transport, and shoreline changes.
- The effects of changing wind and wave climate on energy potential and operational planning.
- The effects of changing design parameters on offshore platforms, renewable energy systems, and port structures.
- Coastal protection strategies, nature-based solutions, and risk management policies.
Expected Contribution: This Special Issue will address existing gaps in the literature by providing policymakers and marine engineers with up-to-date data and methodologies to enable them to develop climate-resilient coastal planning.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
