Sustainable and Durable Building Materials, Volume II

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability has become one of the most important issues in the construction sector. We can no longer ignore the environmental impact of the construction sector, which contributes to 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Extensive research is urgently required to find practical, economical, durable, and environmentally friendly solutions for construction materials integrated into a circular economy perspective. Furthermore, it is of utmost importance for sustainable materials to be able to fulfill durability requirements, since durability is, in itself, a criterion of sustainability.

Given the good success of the first volume published in May 2021, this Special Issue will act as a follow-up and will showcase the latest international efforts in the development and application of sustainable and durable building materials. It is our pleasure to renew our invitation to members of the scientific community engaged in this endeavor to share and publish their latest research in the form of original articles and reviews on this topic. More specifically, research on sustainable building materials, alternative binders and aggregates, recycled aggregates, phase-change materials, functional nanocomposites, recycling, the reuse of wastes and byproducts, the use of biomaterials, self-healing materials, CO₂ emissions, and energy consumption reductions are of particular interest. The influence on environmental sustainability should be considered in terms of not only lifecycle assessment but also of pollutant release or even materials capable of removing pollutants.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
