Design, Fabrication and Applications of Steel Structures
This special issue belongs to the section “Civil Engineering“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Steel structures serve as the backbone of modern infrastructure, facilitating the construction of iconic skyscrapers, expansive bridges, efficient industrial facilities, and resilient energy installations. Their enduring appeal is attributed to their unique synergy of strength, versatility, ductility, and the potential for sustainability through recycling. However, the field is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by advancements in materials science, digital technologies, and sophisticated analysis methods, as well as evolving demands for performance, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. This continuous evolution necessitates the dedicated exploration and dissemination of cutting-edge research and innovative practices.
This Special Issue addresses the comprehensive lifecycle of steel structures, specifically focusing on the integrated themes of Design, Fabrication, and Application. It aims to capture the latest developments and address current challenges in the field. We seek high-quality contributions that explore novel design methodologies, including performance-based, seismic, fire, and sustainable design; optimization techniques; and the application of advanced computational tools such as AI and digital twins. Research on innovative fabrication processes, automation, robotics, additive manufacturing (3D printing), quality control, and the development and use of new high-performance steels (e.g., high-strength, stainless, fire-resistant) is particularly welcome. Furthermore, we encourage the submission of articles that detail pioneering applications, case studies of best practices, advancements in connection design, structural health monitoring, retrofitting techniques, lifecycle assessment, and the role of steel in contributing to the circular economy within construction.
This collection will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, fabricators, and policymakers, facilitating knowledge exchange and accelerating advancements in the sustainable and efficient realization of steel structures for the future.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
