Dear Colleagues,
Advanced drilling, cementing, and completion technologies serve as core engineering processes for the development of deep terrestrial and marine energy resources (including oil, natural gas, and geothermal energy) as well as the implementation of CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) projects. They directly determine the safety, efficiency, and long-term performance of wellbores throughout their full life cycle.
At present, global energy development is continuously expanding into complex engineering scenarios such as ultra-deep and extra-deep formations, high-temperature, and high-pressure environments. Conventional drilling, cementing, and completion technologies face a series of bottlenecks, including low rate of penetration (ROP) during drilling, loss of cement sheath sealing integrity during cementing, and short service life of wellbore assemblies during completion. These issues severely restrict efficient resource development, engineering safety assurance, and green and low-carbon transformation.
The Special Issue “Advanced Drilling, Cementing and Completion Technologies”, which is being launched in response, is of great practical necessity and strategic urgency. It will focus on key“bottleneck” technologies in wellbore engineering, promote theoretical innovation and technological breakthroughs, and facilitate interdisciplinary integration between petroleum well engineering, artificial intelligence, materials science, and other fields. This Special Issue aims to publish cutting-edge theories, key technologies, innovative equipment, and engineering cases in drilling, cementing, and completion worldwide, providing important support for the high-quality development of the industry.
This Special Issue will accept original research, review articles, and engineering cases focusing on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Advanced rock breaking technologies, pressure control, and temperature control technologies in drilling.
- Failure mechanisms and control technologies of wellbore integrity during cementing and completion.
- Advanced measurement technologies and intelligent data analysis methods in petroleum well engineering.
- New low-carbon, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly materials, tools, and equipment for drilling and completion.
- Intelligent risk prediction, real-time monitoring, digital twin, and remote decision-making for geothermal wells and CCUS wells.
- Applications of artificial intelligence, digital twin, and other technologies in drilling, cementing, and completion.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
