Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In scientific research, we are observing significant progress in research methods, allowing the discovery of newer, previously unknown bioactive substances. The source of these compounds are crops, too. These are plants intentionally grown by humans for food, feed or industrial raw materials.
Advances in the analysis of crop-derived bioactive compounds focus on green, efficient extraction methods and high-resolution, precise identification techniques. Key innovations include using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) and enzyme-assisted extraction to increase yields of polyphenols and carotenoids, significantly improving sustainability, selectivity and structural characterization of functional food ingredients. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to cover topics including (but not limited to) the following:
- Recent advances in the extraction techniques, e.g., green extraction technologies, novel solvents and enzymes, and Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE).
- Advances in analytical techniques (identification and characterization), e.g., High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS), Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), bioinformatics and molecular docking.
- Applications and future trends, e.g., valorization of by-products (increased focus on extracting value-added compounds—polyphenols, antioxidants, from agricultural residues like peel, seeds, and pomace to promote a circular economy), standardization and quality control (systematic refinement of methodologies ensures better standardization, e.g., for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical use).

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
