Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cloud computing has changed the face of business and how users interact with technology. This new era of cloud computing created a huge shift that allows users to access computing resources, storage, and applications over the Internet without the need for a huge on-site infrastructure. At its core, cloud computing provides a platform for on-demand services that leverages virtualization and distributed computing, which often include complex artificial intelligence and machine learning platforms. The flexibility and cost-efficiency of cloud solutions have made them increasingly attractive to organizations of all sizes.

Although the cloud is a great tool, it comes with challenges in information security. Data and applications are exchanged across various systems, often requiring a secure medium. Today, cloud providers provide various security solutions, including encryption, access controls, and continuous monitoring. Yet, the challenge of data security remains. With this Special Issue, we invite researchers to contribute to the security challenges arising from new cloud technology. Some cloud research areas on this topic include the following:

  • Zero-trust security models for cloud environments;
  • Privacy-preserving computation methods;
  • Advanced encryption techniques for data in transit and at rest;
  • Secure multi-party computation in the cloud;
  • Enhancing security in Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) environments;
  • Enhancing privacy in cloud-based AI systems;
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) strategies for multi-cloud environments;
  • Secure inter-cloud communication protocols;
  • Quantum-safe cryptography for cloud environments;
  • Blockchain and cloud integration;
  • Cloud networking and software-defined networking (SDN).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

OpenStack is a popular open-source cloud platform that orchestrates virtualized compute, storage, and networking resources. In such virtualized environments, packet traceability refers to the ability to track the path and transformations of network packets as they traverse virtual switches, routers, and interfaces. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of packet traceability in OpenStack cloud environments. We provide an introduction to the OpenStack architecture with a focus on the Networking component (Neutron) and discuss how packets flow through virtual networking elements. We examine the routing and interface mechanisms that enable communication within and across nodes, and compare single-node versus multi-node OpenStack deployments from a packet tracing perspective. Furthermore, we survey tools and techniques for packet tracing (such as monitoring interfaces, using tcpdump, and Open vSwitch tracing), and highlight the challenges faced (multi-tenancy, overlay networks, etc.) in tracing packets. We offer recommendations for improving traceability, including leveraging built-in OpenStack features and advanced kernel-level tracing technologies. Our goal is to aid cloud administrators and researchers in understanding and improving network packet observability in OpenStack clouds, thereby enhancing troubleshooting and security analysis capabilities.
