Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid evolution of Smart Cities is transforming Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) from conventional traffic monitoring into integrated, autonomous, and data-driven mobility ecosystems. Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing, connected and automated vehicles, advanced sensing, and Digital Twins are enabling significant improvements in traffic efficiency, road safety, environmental sustainability, and urban resilience. Meanwhile, increasing urban complexity, multimodal mobility, and the availability of heterogeneous data sources create new scientific challenges that demand innovative and interdisciplinary solutions. This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, engineers, practitioners, and policymakers working on next-generation intelligent and autonomous traffic monitoring, control, and management systems for Smart Cities. We welcome original research, reviews, and case studies covering AI-driven traffic analytics, sensor fusion, computer vision, connected and cooperative mobility, Digital Twins, cyber–physical transportation systems, edge intelligence, multimodal traffic management, environmental monitoring, cybersecurity, and data-driven decision support. Particular emphasis is placed on contributions demonstrating the integration of heterogeneous sensing platforms, scalable digital infrastructures, and autonomous decision-support systems for real-time urban operations. Field deployments, living labs, pilot projects, benchmark datasets, and experimental validations are especially encouraged to bridge the gap between theoretical advances and operational implementation, fostering safer, greener, more resilient, and human-centric mobility systems for future Smart Cities.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
