Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid evolution of Industrial IoT is shifting the current paradigm from centralized cloud architectures toward decentralized, intelligent, edge-based solutions. This Special Issue will focus on the synergy between high-performance microcontrollers, advanced control algorithms, and edge computing to enable smarter, faster, and more efficient industrial processes. We invite contributions that explore the integration of artificial intelligence (Edge AI) and machine learning (TinyML) directly into embedded systems to enhance real-time decision-making. Furthermore, this Special Issue aims to address the challenges of connectivity, energy efficiency, and cybersecurity in modern IIoT environments. By bridging the gap between low-level hardware development and high-level intelligent control, this Special Issue will provide a platform for innovative research in applied sciences and electronics.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Next-generation microcontroller architectures for industrial automation and control.
- Edge AI and TinyML: Deploying machine learning models on resource-constrained embedded devices.
- Intelligent control systems: Advanced algorithms (fuzzy logic, neural networks, MPC) implemented on MCUs.
- Industrial IoT (IIoT) connectivity: Low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN), 5G, and TSN in industrial settings.
- Edge computing in Industry 4/5.0: Distributed processing and real-time data analytics.
- Cybersecurity for edge devices: Hardware-based security, encryption, and secure firmware updates (OTA).
- Energy-efficient embedded systems: Power management and energy harvesting for IIoT nodes.
- Virtualization at the edge: Lightweight containerization and orchestration for industrial gateways.
- Digital twins and IIoT: Integrating physical sensors with virtual models through edge processing.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
