Internet of Things and Wireless Communications in Industry

This special issue belongs to the section “Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless communications within industrial environments represents a transformative leap towards the realization of Industry 4.0. This convergence facilitates unprecedented levels of connectivity, enabling seamless communication between machines, sensors, and control systems. IoT-driven solutions enhance operational efficiency, predictive maintenance, and resource optimization by providing real-time data and analytics. Wireless communication technologies—such as 5G, LPWAN, NB-IoT, and even Beyond 5G (B5G)—support the robust, low-latency, and scalable networks required for such applications.

Industries leveraging IoT and wireless communications benefit from improved automation, enhanced safety protocols, and reduced downtime, thereby fostering a more agile and responsive production landscape. Energy management is a critical area where these technologies can yield significant benefits, from smart grid applications to monitoring and reducing energy consumption across manufacturing processes. The interplay between IoT and wireless communications also supports the development of smart factories, where interconnected systems streamline operations and enhance productivity.

This Special Issue seeks to explore the latest advancements, case studies, and theoretical developments in IoT and wireless communications regarding their applications to industrial contexts. Contributions are invited to address challenges, propose innovative solutions, and present future trends that could further revolutionize industrial processes. Contributions may include the following topics:

  1. Internet of Things (IoT).
  2. Wireless communications.
  3. Industry 4.0.
  4. Smart manufacturing.
  5. Predictive maintenance.
  6. 5G networks.
  7. Low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs).
  8. Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT).
  9. Energy management.
  10. Industrial automation.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
