Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering
This special issue belongs to the section “Civil Engineering“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, civil engineering projects have become increasingly complex, driven by growing sustainability requirements, digitalisation, and the need to balance diverse stakeholder interests. Decisions related to planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance must account for technical, economic, environmental, and social factors, often under incomplete or imprecise information. In this context, decision support systems play a crucial role in improving the transparency, robustness, and quality of decision-making processes in civil engineering. This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in decision support systems applied to civil engineering problems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, multi-criteria decision analysis, optimisation models, expert systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches, uncertainty modelling, and hybrid decision-making frameworks. Contributions addressing infrastructure planning and management, sustainable construction, risk and resilience assessment, urban systems, environmental impacts, and smart infrastructure are particularly welcome. Both methodological developments and real-world applications are encouraged, including case studies that demonstrate how decision support tools can assist engineers, planners, and policymakers in selecting, ranking, and prioritising alternatives. By bringing together interdisciplinary research, this Special Issue seeks to highlight the growing importance of decision support systems in addressing contemporary challenges in civil engineering and supporting more informed, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure decisions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
