Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is dedicated to scientific advances in welding technology and arc-based additive manufacturing.

Welding continues to be one of the most widely used joining processes in industrial applications. The need to be able to process ever more complex materials reliably and to ensure adequate joining properties is being driven forward in particular by lightweight construction and energy efficiency aspects. Today, additive manufacturing complements the current focus in the area of research and industrial application of arc-based welding processes. In addition to process engineering and geometric aspects, material properties are increasingly the focus of research for both sub-areas.

This Special issue aims to present current research in the field of arc-based welding processes and thus to contribute to the transfer of scientific knowledge into application.

Possible topics include the following:

  • Focus: Arc welding processes;
  • Process monitoring and control:
    • Monitoring of temperature;
    • Monitoring of geometry;
    • Indirect monitoring;
  • Planning of generation paths in additive manufacturing;
  • Microstructure of welded joints and additively manufactured materials;
  • Mixed joints;
  • Multi-material systems and design for metal additive manufacturing;
  • Properties of welds and additive manufactured materials:
    • Quasi-static;
    • Fatigue;
    • Crash;
    • Wear;
  • Heat treatment;
  • Corrosion phenomena;
  • Cracking phenomena;
  • Welding residual stresses;
  • Productivity enhancement;
  • Modeling of the welding process;
  • Weldability modeling;
  • Modeling of phase transformation;
  • Modeling of heat transfer.

Papers must focus on metal applications and research.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
