Special Issue Information

Dear Colleague,

In the last few decades, the scientific community, government agencies, private industry, the general public, and many others have been using information provided by airborne and satellite remote sensing data. Particularly, in the last few years, this use has faced an exponential growth due to the emergence of new (high resolution) platforms, the availability of free data and, especially, the addition of new variables to this equation, such as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), Big Data and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). This lead to the development and/or the rebirth of new classification methodologies and algorithms, using segmentation, GEOgraphic Object Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA), Fuzzy analysis, Spectral Unmixing and time-series analysis, just to name a few. This leads to the co-existence of two paradigms: The pixel-based approaches and multi-scale object-based approaches. Even in the pixel-based paradigm, one can see some emerging trend like the use of Machine Learning algorithms, such as random forests, supported vector machines, Neural Networks and Genetic algorithms and, at the same time, very traditional approaches, such as maximum likelihood classification. Thus, this is the time to perform a survey of the emerging methods and algorithms used in supervised image classification and their application to the different sciences and thematic fields.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
