Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies are rapidly transforming medicine, health sciences, and healthcare delivery. At the same time, the growing diversity of medical images, physiological signals, electronic health records, wearable-sensor data, videos, multimodal datasets, and human–machine interaction data is creating new algorithmic challenges. Progress in this field requires not only the application of existing artificial intelligence techniques, but also the development of new algorithms and methodologically meaningful improvements to existing algorithms that can address the accuracy, robustness, interpretability, efficiency, scalability, and clinical relevance required in real-world healthcare environments.

This Special Issue, entitled 'Exploring Algorithms in Medicine and Healthcare: Medical AI, Imaging, Health Science Analytics, and Physical AI', aims to provide a broad forum for original research and high-quality reviews on algorithmic innovation for medicine and health. We particularly welcome studies proposing novel algorithms, improved or optimized algorithms, new learning strategies, computational frameworks, and rigorous evaluation methods, together with evidence demonstrating how these advances may contribute to future medicine, health promotion, healthcare services, or human-centered health technologies.

The scope includes, but is not limited to, medical artificial intelligence; medical image processing and analysis; computer-aided detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and quantitative imaging; machine learning, deep learning, foundation models, and multimodal learning; health-science and biomedical data analytics; physiological signal and sensor-data analysis; wearable and mobile healthcare applications; digital health and healthcare service optimization; clinical decision support; personalized and preventive healthcare; explainable and trustworthy AI; uncertainty estimation and reliability assessment; privacy-preserving and federated learning; efficient, lightweight, and edge-AI algorithms; digital twins and simulation; medical robotics; human-AI interaction; and physical AI integrating perception, intelligence, and action in healthcare environments.

Submissions should emphasize the algorithmic contribution and clearly describe the novelty or improvement over existing approaches. Studies that connect methodological advances with clinically or scientifically meaningful evaluation, reproducibility, generalizability, workflow integration, or prospective healthcare value are especially encouraged. By bringing together researchers in computer science, engineering, medicine, health sciences, and related disciplines, this Special Issue seeks to consolidate useful knowledge and identify algorithmic directions that can support safer, more effective, and more intelligent medicine and healthcare in the AI era.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
