Dear Colleagues,
Agricultural production depends on the continuous observation, interpretation, and management of living organisms, including crops, horticultural plants, livestock, poultry, and other agricultural biological systems. Although these systems differ in biological characteristics and production practices, they share a common need to accurately perceive growth, health, stress, behavior, nutrition, and environmental responses under complex and dynamic conditions.
Recent advances in artificial intelligence, particularly multimodal learning and foundation models, provide new opportunities to integrate heterogeneous agricultural data, such as images, videos, remote sensing observations, sensor signals, environmental records, and textual knowledge. These methods are moving agricultural intelligence beyond single-task perception toward more generalizable state understanding, cross-scenario diagnosis, predictive modeling, and decision support.
This Special Issue aims to present recent advances in multimodal artificial intelligence and foundation models for agricultural organism sensing and decision-making. We welcome studies addressing crops, plants, livestock, poultry, aquaculture, and their interactions with management and environmental conditions. Contributions may focus on methodological innovation, agricultural applications, benchmark datasets, intelligent systems, or deployment in real production scenarios.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Multimodal AI for crop, plant, livestock, and poultry systems;
- Foundation models and large models for agricultural applications;
- Vision-language models and cross-modal agricultural understanding;
- Image, video, sensor, remote sensing, acoustic, and text data fusion;
- Plant phenotyping, crop growth monitoring, and stress diagnosis;
- Livestock behavior recognition, health monitoring, and welfare assessment;
- Agricultural intelligent agents and decision-support systems;
- Domain adaptation, transfer learning, and model generalization;
- Explainable, trustworthy, and deployable AI in agriculture;
- AI-assisted precision management and closed-loop agricultural decision-making.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Agriculture is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
