Dear Colleagues,
Pesticides have played a crucial role in modern agriculture, contributing to increased crop yields and protecting plants from various pests and diseases. However, their use may pose significant risks for the environment, compromising the health of ecosystems and the species within them. Farmers and farm workers may be exposed to pesticides during the mixing, application, and handling of these substances, which increases their health risks. Pesticides can leave residues on agricultural products, which can be ingested by consumers, potentially causing acute or long-term health effects. Nevertheless, as highlighted by the European Parliamentary Research Service, significant food losses may be encountered without the use of plant protection products (PPPs). Therefore, while pesticides can be useful tools for pest control, ensuring food security and safety, their use should be carefully managed to minimize their negative impacts. In this context, this Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to chemistry, behaviour, fate, impacts, and effects of pesticides. We will consider contributions addressing: (i) monitoring and behaviour of pesticides in air, soil, water, and non-target organisms; (ii) modelling the fate, exposure, effects of pesticides: multi-scale environmental scenarios and recent developments; (iii) new frontiers in pesticide science: linking application technology, exposure, and effect risk assessment; and (iv) enhancements of policy uptake through new options for the risk assessment and management of pesticides.
