Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Extensive livestock systems play a crucial role in sustaining rural landscapes, preserving biodiversity, and ensuring food security. However, these systems face increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance animal welfare, and adapt to socio-economic and climatic changes. This Special Issue, “Sustainable Transitions Toward Climate-Neutral and Multifunctional Extensive Livestock Systems”, aims to explore innovative strategies, technologies, and governance models that can drive the transformation of extensive livestock farming toward sustainability and climate neutrality. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions addressing topics such as low-carbon livestock management, circular bioeconomy approaches, ecosystem services, precision and digital tools for grazing management, socio-economic drivers of sustainability, and policy frameworks supporting climate-smart livestock. Comparative studies, case analyses, and integrated assessments linking environmental, social, and economic dimensions are particularly encouraged. By bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, this Special Issue seeks to identify pathways that reconcile productivity, resilience, and environmental integrity in extensive livestock systems, ultimately contributing to a climate-neutral and multifunctional agricultural future.
