Special Issue "Recent Advances on Servovalves"
A special issue of Actuators (ISSN 2076-0825). This special issue belongs to the section "High Torque/Power Density Actuators".
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 30 November 2021.
Special Issue Editors
Interests: development of a novel servo valve actuated by piezoelectric actuators, capable of providing better performance and lower power consumption than current servo valves used in aircraft and industry; analysis of the energy losses (internal leakage) in servo valves caused by geometrical imperfections arising from manufacturing processes, and of the damping factor caused by the squeeze film inside the flapper-flexure tube system; development of empirical models for the calculation of the laminar flame speed with application to different fuels and chemical compositions; development of innovative techniques for measuring the in-cylinder pressure (by means of strain gauges) and the injector opening (by means of optical sensors) in reciprocating internal combustion engines; study of innovative externally fired configurations and gas-to-gas heat exchangers which can allow carbon-neutral biomass to be used in small-scale combined-cycle power plants (gas/steam) for energy generation

Interests: study of novel servovalves actuated by smart materials; analysis of cavitation in hydraulic valves; fluid dynamic design optimization of hydraulic valves; systems for energy generation and heat exchange: with studies on wind turbines, combined cycles employing externally fired gas turbines, and Rankine cycles using water and organic fluids; design optimization of combined-cycle power plants and thermo-economic analyses by using genetic algorithms; construction of a small-scale combined-cycle prototype for energy generation from solid biomass and biogas; innovative immersed particle heat exchangers for heat recovery; development of an innovative open field wind tunnel for the testing of micro wind turbines; design of a novel heat exchanger employing solid alumina particles as a heat transfer medium, with the aim of realizing externally fired gas turbines
Interests: the study of critical issues of particular concern, such as the pollutant emission processes deriving from combustion sources; the employment of 3D CFD simulations—involving detailed chemistry-based models as well as accurate heat-exchange and flame-propagation sub-models—coupled with extended experimental campaigns, has provided further guidance in better understanding soot formation and oxidation processes occurring within a spark-ignition engine; the development of simple and reliable analytical correlations that allow a fast and accurate calculation of the laminar flame speed of practical fuels; the design of measurement systems for monitoring the injector opening time in common-rail systems, as well as for monitoring the in-cylinder pressure by means of a non-intrusive technique; the analysis and design of energy-generation and heat-exchange systems, as well as the experimental and numerical analysis of multi-phase flows with applications in the design of proportional valves by me

Interests: hydraulic and thermal machines; fluid dynamics; the design of numerical methods for compressible and incompressible flows; stability analysis of shear flows; turbulence and transition modeling; combustion modeling; numerical analysis of complex flow in turbomachinery; energy systems
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The journal Actuators (ISSN 2076-0825; CODEN: ACTUC3, Scopus indexed, IF = 1.957) is currently running a Special Issue entitled “Recent Advances on Servovalves”.
Prof. Dr. Paolo Tamburrano, Prof. Dr. Riccardo Amirante, Prof. Dr. Elia Distaso, and Prof. Dr. Pietro De Palma are serving as guest editors for this Special Issue.
The articles in this Special Issue will be concerned with one of the most important topics in the industry, aerospace, and transportation sectors: servovalves. This term includes single stage (direct drive), two stage, and multi-stage electro-hydraulic and pneumatic valves. This Special Issue invites contributions dealing with the following: reviews of recent advances in industry and academia; analysis of the current issues of servovalves using numerical and/or experimental approaches; proposals and studies aimed at overcoming the issues and drawbacks of commercial designs; novel actuation systems for servovalves based on smart materials (e.g., piezo-electric actuators); improved control systems; novel valve architectures for improving performance or other aspects; and novel or improved empirical, numerical, and CFD approaches to study certain aspects of these valves.
The submission deadline is 31 August 2021. You may send your manuscript at any point from now until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Actuators is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
