Intelligent Communication and Sensor Networks for Advanced Signal Processing

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid development of intelligent communication systems and sensor networks is transforming modern signal processing and data-driven decision-making. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, edge computing, and next-generation communication systems (5G/6G, IoT, and IIoT) are enabling sensing platforms that are not only faster and more accurate, but also autonomous, adaptive, and energy efficient.

This Special Issue, ‘Intelligent Communication and Sensor Networks for Advanced Signal Processing’, aims to showcase recent advances in intelligent sensing architectures, smart communication frameworks, and AI-enhanced signal processing methodologies. We particularly encourage research that integrates smart sensors, real-time edge analytics, and AI-driven optimization to improve system scalability, resilience, and reliability across diverse applications, including industrial automation, healthcare monitoring, environmental sensing, transportation, and smart cities.

In this Special Issue, original research articles, case studies, and comprehensive reviews are invited on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • AI and machine learning algorithms for sensor data analysis and communication optimization;
  • Intelligent and adaptive signal processing for sensor networks;
  • Distributed and cooperative sensing and decision-making architectures;
  • Edge and fog computing for real-time sensor data analytics;
  • Next-generation wireless sensor networks (5G/6G, IoT, and IIoT);
  • Free-Space Optical (FSO) and hybrid optical–wireless communication systems;
  • Energy-efficient communication and data compression in smart sensing systems;
  • Multi-sensor data fusion and uncertainty quantification;
  • Intelligent fault detection, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance;
  • Cognitive and reconfigurable communication networks for sensor systems;
  • Applications in structural health monitoring, smart cities, environmental sensing, and autonomous vehicles.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together interdisciplinary contributions that bridge the gap between signal processing theory, intelligent communication, and sensor network applications, paving the way toward smarter, faster, and more reliable sensing systems for future digital ecosystems.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Big Data and Cognitive Computing is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
