NDT | Ph.D. Scholarships Open for Applications

The School of Computing and Engineering and the Faringdon Research Centre for Non-Destructive Testing and Remote Sensing at the University of West London (UK) would like to invite applications for fully funded Vice Chancellor’s Ph.D. scholarships (international and home applicants) in the monitoring of pavements and transport structures (highways, railways, and airfields) using non-destructive testing, remote sensing, and immersive technologies.

Available project calls are focused on the areas of:

  • Network-level pavement infrastructure monitoring through satellite observations;
  • Green infrastructure monitoring using satellite remote sensing to enhance urban sustainability;
  • Monitoring of historical heritage for sustainable urban development using satellite remote sensing;
  • Railway track foundations and ballast monitoring using remote sensing and ground-based non-destructive testing methods;
  • Assessing and monitoring highways and pavements using remote sensing and ground-based non-destructive testing methods;
  • Assessing and monitoring airfield runways and taxiway structures using ground-penetrating radar and satellite Imaging;
  • Applications of ground-penetrating radar and machine learning algorithms in assessing the mechanical properties of pavements;
  • Visualising and communicating data from remote sensing and non-destructive testing using immersive technology for civil infrastructure and environmental asset monitoring.

Prospective candidates must hold a post-graduate (master’s) degree relevant to the project, as per the relative call here (“Civil engineering” and “Extended reality and multimedia” sections).

The deadline for applications is 3 November 2023.

Preliminary enquiries can be directed to Prof. Fabio Tosti (Fabio.Tosti@uwl.ac.uk), Editor-in-Chief of NDT (ISSN: 2813-477X) and Director of the Faringdon Research Centre for Non-Destructive Testing and Remote Sensing at UWL.
