The aim of this work is to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Attitudes Scale on Alcohol, Alcoholism and Persons with Alcohol Use Disorders (EAFAA) after their cultural and linguistic validation to the Portuguese population. An analysis of the psychometric characteristics is performed for a convenience sample with 500 health professionals and students in the health and social fields, recruited between May 2021 and March 2022, using confirmatory factor analysis and determination of reliability and validity. The psychometric qualities evaluation of EAFAA-PT allows us to consider this work as a valid and reliable instrument for use in the Portuguese population. Full article

Nursing students, as future health professionals and most likely shift workers, are a group to which more attention should be paid regarding sleep quality. To verify the existence of a relationship between health literacy and sleep quality in nursing students, we developed a quantitative descriptive–correlational study with 95 participants. The instruments for data collection were the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-PT) and the Health Literacy Scale (HLS-EU-PT). Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 26 software. Here, 81.8% of the participants considered that they had a good quality of sleep. However, the remaining variables contradicted this assessment: usual sleep efficiency (65%), sleep disorders (97.9%), daytime dysfunction (75.8%) and use of medication to fall asleep (97.0%). The level of health literacy is considered inadequate, and there is no statistically significant correlation between health literacy and sleep quality. Full article

Nursing finds the basis for its action in research. The main purpose of research is to discover how to improve nursing care. Nurses are required to provide quality care based on the latest scientific evidence. We expect higher education institutions to develop scientific research; therefore, there seems to be a close relationship between research and teaching. Reconciling these two dimensions is not an easy task. This study demonstrates the close relationship between research and teaching. However, it also highlights some constraints related to the small number of full-time researchers and the difficulty reconciling research and teaching. Full article

Hand hygiene is a simple and effective measure to stop the cross-transmission of infectious microorganisms. Hospitalized children are a vulnerable group to infections, and hand hygiene by health professionals ensures safer care. This study aimed to evaluate the practice of hand hygiene by nurses working in a paediatric ward. We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study, with a convenience sample consisting of 28 nurses. We observed 224 opportunities for hand hygiene and a high adherence to this practice (91.1%). We observed the lowest adherence regarding the hygiene technique and its duration. A multimodal intervention is being prepared. Full article

Social alcohol consumption in Portugal is highly accepted despite its risks and consequences. Health professionals’ attitudes toward alcohol may influence care for people with alcohol-related problems. The aim of this study is to adapt linguistically and culturally the attitudes toward alcohol scale for the Portuguese population (EAFAA). The risk of suicide in the elderly is higher than in the general population. Therefore, we aim to provide information that supports nursing decision-making in assessing this risk. Methodologically, we conducted a literature review. We analysed nine articles that supported the model developed in the flowchart divided into three phases: anamnesis, risk analysis and nursing interventions according to weighted risk. As a consequence of COVID-19, it is believed that there is an increase in suffering and the risk of suicide, making it pertinent to disseminate information of quick consultation that supports decision-making in nursing. Patient safety culture is fundamental to the quality of health systems and crucial in adverse contexts, characterised by high workloads and time pressure. This is a cross-sectional study. The results have shown that emergency service nurses considered 10 dimensions of safety culture as weak and a total of 12 dimensions needed improvement. Therefore, it is essential to implement strategies to improve a culture of patient safety, such as raising the team’s awareness about this and the importance of notification. Managers should be involved in patient safety problem-related contexts. Full article

The communication of bad news, particularly in situations of an unexpected death, is one of the most difficult tasks for health professionals. It is important to be aware of the words used and the way the loss is conveyed, as these can mark the family forever, influencing grief management. The communication of death should therefore not be an improvised act, but rather, the health professional should have knowledge about the most adequate communication approach for each situation. In the chaotic and often violent prehospital environment, no protocols with the aim of guiding professionals to carry out this communication were discovered. Full article
