Cover Story: Hypertension (HTN) affects more than 60% of individuals aged older than 65 years representing a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and playing a crucial role for approximately 8.5 million deaths from ischemic heart disease, renal and vascular disorders. HTN affects cerebral functions leading to the so-called cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), a disorder characterized by lesions on small arteries, capillaries, arterioles and venules. CSVD is to a great extent asymptomatic, however, microbleeds, microinfarcts or lacunes in the brain can accumulate over time and increase the risk of stroke, dementia, depression and mobility disorders. It is already known that HTN is strongly linked with CSVD, however, there is room for further research to better understand their close relationship. View this paper
