Analysis of a Probe of the Historical Dye Aldehyde Green Deposited in the Historical Dyestuff Collection of the Technical University Dresden
Round 1

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe work is clearly introduced and properly conducted to the results. I could give only some suggestions to make the reading easier for the reader and a few things not clear at all:
-pag3, first paragraph citing D: letter D is not reported in the Scheme;
-pag4, materials and methods section: except LC-MS, the description of the other techniques is too poor and I would suggest to explicit more details;
-pag5, figure 2: add "4" when describing letters a-c; change "und" with "and";
- pag5, first paragraph: change figure SI1 with S1, accordingly to the other part of the text;
-pag5: I would suggest to postpone the UV/VIS comment after concluding at all the part on TLC and NRM as it breaks the speech;
-pag5: could the Authors clarify if the comment on TLC arises from the direct, visual comparison of the behaviour of Fuchsine and Aldehyde Green at the same substrate/eluent?
-pag5, referencing figure S2: change with S1 (S2 reports the mass spectra, not NMR spectra);
-pag6, "For evaluation....have been considered.": for an easier reading I would suggest to add the stem numbers of such components (1,5,9,10,12,17,18,21) or add what you specify at pag8 after referencing Table1 (that is, the components considered are all those marked in figure 4);
-pag6, both in the same paragraph as above and in the caption of figure5: please add that the text is referring to the compound marked as 12b;
-pag7, second paragraph ("In the chromatogram...component mentioned above."): please add that the text is dealing with components 12a,c,d;
-pag7, last paragraph: similarly to above, please add that the text is referring to component 12a when dealing with the m/z 440.2134;
-pag8, first paragraph: similarly to above, specifiy next to the proper m/z that the text is referring to 12b,12c,12d; figure S3 should be changed with S2;
-figures S3 and following: please check commas/full stop for decimal places;
-pag8, second paragraph: I would remove the sentence related to figure4, taking into account the suggestion above mentioned for pag6;

-pag3, first paragraph citing D: letter D is not reported in the Scheme;
Answer: letter D is added
-pag4, materials and methods section: except LC-MS, the description of the other techniques is too poor and I would suggest to explicit more details;
Answer: for the UV/Vis measurements the following text was added:
The wavelength ranges from 350 to 800 nm, the signal average time is 0.1s, the data interval 1.00 nm and the scan rate 600.00 nm/min.
-pag5, figure 2: add "4" when describing letters a-c; change "und" with "and";
Answer: “und” is replaced by “and”: Unfortunately, we have forgotten to add the number “(4)” in the corrected manuscript. This addition will be done in the galley proof.
- pag5, first paragraph: change figure SI1 with S1, accordingly to the other part of the text;
Answer: label SI1 coincided with SI1 in Supporting Information
-pag5: I would suggest to postpone the UV/VIS comment after concluding at all the part on TLC and NRM as it breaks the speech;
Answer: The comment was not shifted
-pag5: could the Authors clarify if the comment on TLC arises from the direct, visual comparison of the behavior of Fuchsine and Aldehyde Green at the same substrate/eluent?
Answer: the authors see no need to clarify the comment
-pag5, referencing figure S2: change with S1 (S2 reports the mass spectra, not NMR spectra);
Answer: S2 was changed in S1
-pag6, "For evaluation....have been considered.": for an easier reading I would suggest to add the stem numbers of such components (1,5,9,10,12,17,18,21) or add what you specify at pag8 after referencing Table1 (that is, the components considered are all those marked in figure 4);
Answer: Compounds occurring in higher amounts are marked in the chromatogram in Fig. 4; for a detailed assignment refer to Table 1.
-pag6, both in the same paragraph as above and in the caption of figure5: please add that the text is referring to the compound marked as 12b;
Answer: the numbers are added
-pag7, second paragraph ("In the chromatogram...component mentioned above."): please add that the text is dealing with components 12a,c,d;
Answer: the numbers are added
-pag7, last paragraph: similarly to above, please add that the text is referring to component 12a when dealing with the m/z 440.2134;
Answer: the compounds number are added,
-pag8, first paragraph: similarly to above, specifiy next to the proper m/z that the text is referring to 12b,12c,12d; figure S3 should be changed with S2;
Answer: the compound numbers are added, figure S3 is changed with S2
-figures S3 and following: please check commas/full stop for decimal places;
Answer: the commas are replaced by dots
-pag8, second paragraph: I would remove the sentence related to figure4, taking into account the suggestion above mentioned for pag6;
Answer: sentence was removed

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe article titled “Analysis of a probe of the historical dye Aldehyde Green deposited in the Historical Dyestuff Collection of the Technical University Dresden” by Susanne Machill , Maximilian Voigtmann , David Nescholta , and Horst Hartmann, details the analytical characterization of Aldehyde Green deposited in the Historical Dyestuff Collection of the Technical University Dresden. The analysis reveals a mixture of different compounds in which the aniline and toluidine moieties of the starting Fuchsine are transferred into dihydroquinaldine and quinaldine moieties. The D-A interactions between the aniline/ toludine and dihydroquinaldine and quinaldine moieties.
Aldehyde green is an important historical dye and knowing it’s chemical composition is an interesting topic in historic development of chemistry of dyes. The study is based mostly on LC-MS and MS-MS analysis. Few suggestions may improve the manuscript further.
- In SI1: the Story on the first successful practical use of Aldehyde Green, can be translated in English in addition to German for the broader reader perspective.
- Labeling of structure D is missing in Scheme 1.
- The NMR spectra in Esi can be given in overlayed fashion. Or separate larger images can be given. The aromatic region in NMR spectra can be enlarged into separate images.

- In SI1: the Story on the first successful practical use of Aldehyde Green, can be translated in English in addition to German for the broader reader perspective.
Answer: an English version of the German text is presented
2. Labeling of structure D is missing in Scheme 1.
Answer: label D is added
3. The NMR spectra in Esi can be given in overlayed fashion. Or separate larger images can be given. The aromatic region in NMR spectra can be enlarged into separate images.
Answer: because the samples are mixtures of components it seems inexpediently to demonstrate enlarged images
