Biobased Anti-Adhesive Marine Coatings from Polyhydroxyalkanoates and Polysaccharides
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The review is dealing with new eco-friendly coatings using biobased polymers: polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and polysaccharides. PHAs are polyesters produced by the bacteria in stressful conditions. Polysaccharides are extracted from plants, animals or micro-organisms as bacteria (called exopolysaccharides (EPS)). The review is well written, with number of quotations, completes overview function.
Comments:
Formal: The sentence of Line 19 should be corrected. Instead of active form of the verb passive form should be used. Line 192: correct form of the quotation should be used. L 495 symbols are missing
The title of the paper is: Biobased adhesive marine coatings; quotation from the paper: the review mainly highlights anti-adhesive surfaces based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) (section 2) and polysaccharides (section 3) etc (). I suggest unifying the title and content of the paper.
Could you please give short comment on formation of carbon dioxide under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the sense of global CO2 formation (Line 139-141).

Response: we have taken into consideration the reviewer's proposal. The title has been changed: Biobased Anti-adhesive Marine Coatings from Polyhydroxyalcanoates and polysaccharides
Could you please give short comment on formation of carbon dioxide under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the sense of global CO2 formation (Line 139-141).
Biodegradation of PHA under aerobic conditions results in carbon dioxide and water, whereas in anaerobic conditions the degradation products are carbon dioxide and methane. They are degraded by microorganisms that secrete specific enzymes PHA depolymerases that break the polymer into its molecular building blocks, called hydroxyacids, which are utilized as a carbon source for growth. PHA-biodegradation thus releases CO2 and/or methane, that can be consumed by the biomass, and could also contribute to the increase of greenhouse gases. However considering the overall life cycle of the PHA in an circular economy, they should have low little impact on the global CO2 in the environment (Vea et al. 2021, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2021.147544).
Reviewer 2 Report
This manuscript presents a good review about biobased adhesive marine coatings, including the coatings based on PHA (extraction and characterization, advantages and application, anti-adhesives PHA coatings), coatings based on polysaccharides (anti-adhesives polysaccarides, particular case of exopolysaccharides) based on 130 references. However, the following are items that the authors would need to address:
1) In the keywords there is cells-surfaces interactions, but I could not find the content about this keyword in the manuscript including the abstract.
2)On line 160 it was written “in this study”. Is the result in Figure 2 was down by yourselves, or from literatures [62]?
3) The authors are suggested to add one or two literatures published in 2023.

Response: We are agreeing with reviewer. Cells-surface interactions has been replaced by cells adhesion.
2)On line 160 it was written “in this study”. Is the result in Figure 2 was down by yourselves, or from literatures [62]?
Response: The sentence has been corrected.
3) The authors are suggested to add one or two literatures published in 2023.
Response: We have added or replaced a dozen of recent reference published in 2023.
Reviewer 3 Report
The review provides an overview of the applications of two biopolymers as a new anti-adhesive marine coatings. A thorough revision of the text is recommended.
1. Authors should centralize Figure 1 in the text (line 104-105)
2. line 156 "2.3. Anti-adhesives PHA coatings" this could be a part of the advantage of PHA "2.2. Advantages and application of PHA (line 129)
3. Line 163 "Figure 2 shows the bacterial and 162 diatom bioadhesion on the coatings" please explain more
4. After line 163 eliminate spaces
5. Line 185- line 198 Please add references
6. Figure 5 is a little blurry
7. Authors should correct this sentence "However, CAR's sulfate content influenced its performance. - and -CAR contain fewer sulfate groups than -CAR," (line 307 -308)
8.Line 355 add reference
9 "3.2.1. Antiadhesive activity of bacterial exopolysaccharides" "3.2.1. Antiadhesive EPS coatings" 3.2.1. Antiadhesive EPS coatings
Correct title number and check that for all the text
10. line 641 "Antiadhesive EPS coatings" try to discuss more and to improve this part
